President's Corner

by John Callaway

April is here and, with it, warmer weather.  But, don’t forget our crazy late freezes.  Last year a late cold snap caused several days below freezing.  Many bonsai were unnecessarily damaged by the cold.  When freezing temperatures are expected, be sure to protect newly repotted or cold-sensitive trees.  If you are planning on being out of town, let a club member know so that they can check on your trees.  It would be a shame to ruin years of development in a few nights of cold weather.

The annual Spring Show at Yew Dell Gardens is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 26th and 27th.  We will need plenty of members to show trees, work the greeting booth, and man the vendor area.  The club has an assortment of young junipers, elms, maples, and other trees to sell in the vending area.  If you have an older specimen that you would like to part with, why not add it to the vending area?  The club will accept donated items or require 15% of the sale.

Tuesday, April 22nd

The Greater Louisville Bonsai Society has been invited to display in the lobby of the National City Tower building on Tuesday, April 22nd (Earth Day) between the hours of 11am and 2pm.  This small bonsai display will be viewed by nearly every person who will travel through the lobby during lunch time.  This is a great opportunity to get more information about bonsai and the Greater Louisville Bonsai Society out to the public.  We will also have the opportunity to promote the Spring Show at Yew Dell Gardens the following Saturday.  We need a commitment from several club members who can help setup and display during the day.  Please contact me by Tuesday, April 8th if you’re interested in helping in some way.

Due to the Spring Show, the 2nd Tuesday and following Saturday meetings will be later in the month.

4th Tuesday (April 22nd)

This month the 2nd Tuesday meeting will be moved to the 4th Tuesday to prepare for the Spring Show at Yew Dell Gardens.  On Tuesday, April 22nd at 7pm, we will meet at Bon Air Library to prepare trees for the Spring Show.  This will include cleaning of pots, soil surface, trunk, branches, foliage, and any small adjustment and fine wiring.  Please bring trees, cleaning cloths, and stands.  Come ready to work.

Following Saturday/Sunday (April 26-27)

The following Saturday meeting for April will be Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27, at Yew Dell Gardens.  This is the annual plant sale at Yew Dell, starting their spring season.  This year the Greater Louisville Bonsai Society will be having their Spring Show in the Bank Barn.  This is will give the club more than double the space to display trees and information about bonsai.  We will need every club member’s help to display, answer questions, work the greeting booth and vendor’s area.  Setup will be on Thursday and Friday, April 24th and 25th, from 10am until 5pm.  The majority of the work will need to be completed during these times.  If you cannot make it during the day on Thursday or Friday to help setup, please arrive early Saturday morning to complete setup.  Club members will be available on Saturday morning, April 25th starting at 8am.
